Upcoming Community Testing and Potential Impact on MPERS Devices
You may already be aware that community testing of the Australian Government’s ew AusAlert warning system is scheduled to commence shortly.
The new platform is designed to provide emergency notifications and critical public safety alerts directly to compatible mobile devices.
Following discussions with Telstra, it has been confirmed that IoT SIM services will not be excluded from receiving these alerts at this stage. Based on our current understanding, conventional PERS devices are not expected to be affected, as they do not utilise compatible operating systems. However, Mobile Personal Emergency Response System (MPERS) devices that use compatible mobile operating systems may receive these notifications and could therefore be impacted.
What You Need to Know:
- Traditional PERS devices are not expected to be affected.
- Most Android-based MPERS devices may receive AusAlert notifications.
- Telstra has confirmed that IoT SIM services are currently included.
- Community testing is expected to occur on 27 July 2026.
- The AusAlert service is scheduled to go live nationally on 1 October 2026.
- The impact on device behavior and user experience is still being assessed.
